- Probation is the initial settling-in period in a new job, which allows you and your employer to decide if the job is suitable for you.
- A probation period usually lasts a couple of months, but can be more or less, depending on the nature of the work.
- You must be paid for any work you do during this period.
What you can do
Ask your employer if you are under a probation period when you start work, and for how long. Keep a record of the answer if it is not given to you in writing.
See if your award or enterprise agreement says anything about probation periods. Contact the Fair Work Infoline on 13 13 94 or chat online with a Live help adviser if you need help to find out.
