Problems at work: What can I do if I think my employer owes me money?

  • If you think you have been underpaid or missed out on other entitlements, you need to do something about it or it may continue.
  • You can ask your employer or union representative to explain what you should have been paid. It’s always best to ask your employer first in case it is an honest mistake.
  • You can recover unpaid wages by lodging a workplace complaint with the Fair Work Ombudsman, who can investigate underpayments and help you get any pay you might be owed.

Did you know?

The Fair Work Ombudsman has prosecuted employers for threatening to fire employees who question their pay. The Fair Work Ombudsman has also recovered wages for many workers who have been underpaid.

There is a Fair Work Ombudsman’s office in every state and territory. You can ring 13 13 94 or visit an office in person.
